Since reform and opening, Chengdu’s industry has gradually entered a fast and steady development stage. Especially after 90s, along with the establishment of market economy system, industry economy has gradually transformed from large-scale type into efficiency type, meanwhile, development of high and new-tech industry and renovation of traditional industry adopting high and new technology has speeded up, thus the four leading industries of food, medicine, machinery and electronic information have gradually developed and strengthened. During the period of “The Ninth Five-year Plan”, our city formally established those four industries as leading industries of our city and hoped them to become the pillars of regional economy and to bring along the development of some other industries.

In recent years, our city’s leading industries have fast and steadily developed, which have constituted the main part of all the industries above standard scale in the city. In 2003, our city’s leading industries have achieved industrial added value 20.448 billion RMB, increasing 22.8 per cent and contributing 62 per cent to total sum of all industries above standard scale in the city; in an entire year, industrial sales income has achieved 55.830 billion RMB, taking 59.9 per cent of all above standard scale; profit payments and tax turnover have achieved 7.297 billion RMB, taking 60.7 per cent of all above standard scale. Among those, machinery industry has achieved added value 6.053 billion RMB, increasing 25.7 per cent; food industry has achieved added value 6.697 billion RMB, increasing 17.6 per cent; medicine industry has achieved added value 3.025 billion RMB, increasing 19.3 per cent; electronic and communication product manufacture industry has achieved added value 4.672 billion RMB, increasing 26.2 per cent.
