Ten teams of some 1,000 bicycle lovers staged a campaign under the motto "Drive One Day Less" last Sunday in Beijing.

The teams, which were made up of ordinary citizens, students, showbiz celebrities, members of the drivers' clubs and staff of government agencies', started their tour from ten different scenic spots. They rode by Beijing's ancient relics, landmark buildings and Olympic venues, attracting swarms of fellow riders.

The 90-minute trip ended at 9:30 am, when the riders gathered at the CCTV Tower to form five rings, bringing the campaign to its climax. The volunteers performed bicycling skills, street dances, basketball games, as well as roller skating styles. Some 10,000 Beijingers are reported to have signed up as participants in the "Drive One Day Less" activity.

Du Shaozhong, vice director of Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, who joined the campaign, praised the riders for their environmental awareness.
